Why sensabout...?
We live in a multi-sensory world. We use our 7 sensory systems all the time to make sense of our world. The brain constantly processes this information and so we learn. We learn most effectively by using more than one sense at a time and that is the basis of the multi-sensory approach to learning in education. If everything is seen in terms of giving the brain a broad, structured sensory input then the brain has the best chance of processing, understanding and assimilating the task in hand. Everyone has a preferred style of learning and we all respond slightly differently to the senses in varying combinations. Using a variety of senses in an activity solves this problem. There is the added advantage that learners experiencing a sensory loss or deficit are able to participate in the same learning experience.
We created the first sensabout. series to provide an enjoyable multi-sensory experience whilst also providing a vehicle for learning or consolidating learning about shapes. Its initial concept grew from a realisation that there was a gap in curricular and other easy to use resources for use with people with profound and multiple learning disabilities. It soon became apparent that its use went far beyond this point and could even be used with young children in nurseries or primary schools, and even with older clients who have poor recall or difficulties with memory. They are not age dependent and are suitable for use with learners from 1 to 100!
The pack has been trialled successfully with learners with multi-sensory impairments and has shown statistically significant results when used as the basis of a research project on levels of engagement.
The aim has been to create a fun learning experience for all. We hope you and your children/clients enjoy the experience! |
